Video: How to optimize your nonprofit website home page (in Drupal)

(Be patient...HD version of video is a bit of a slow load/big file...sorry!)

In yesterday's blog I wrote about how you can get some very strategic analytics results to improve your nonprofit website home page...in under 5 minutes.

What I did was I logged into my own Google Analytics account and shared the click results of the IT For Change home page, outlining what I wanted to change.  My analysis of a few things I wanted to try was:

  • Improve the social media icons from "blah" grey to something with more color.
  • Change the menu structure, testing to see if I can increase click-through rates on certain pages.
  • Drop the sitemap as it wasn't being used by viewers.
  • Change the order of my "Call to Action" buttons (i.e. the newsletter subscription & the website project kit download).
  • Move the "Latest Video" block to see if it would get more clicks.

Note that my approach to this exercise was intentionally "simplistic"...as I did this more for sharing & educationaly purposes than for strategic purposes.  Had I been looking to really improve my own analytics with this exercise I would have done deeper analysis which would have included things such as fonts, colors, text of calls to action, white space etc.

Now, sit back and relax and take a few minutes to see how easy it can be to.  My apologies in advance for my meandering near the end....I was a bit stuck as I was editing my website "live" and wasn't 100% sure what it would look like once I hit "Save"....not my recommended best practice!

The Takeaway

Success with your nonprofit website requires solid content, as well as measuring with a trial & error approach.  It is not an exact science...so start somewhere, take risks, try things.  You might be really surpised how small changes create large impacts.
